Cosmic Corner proudly flies the Koru (Hundertwasser/ Hundervasse) flag in every store, and put it on everything we produce to identify our products, especially those we send overseas. We consider it to be the alternative Aotearoa flag, one that truly represents the country in a way that the Union Jack does not (and to be honest, never really did in the first place!) Apart from the fact that it looks great (we love green), and can never be confused for an Australian flag, the flag inspires us to contribute to a positive vision for the future of the country. This design symbolises growth and fertility, had an ecologoical clean green focus, and recognises our Maori heritage.
Created by world famous artist, architect, and environmentalist, Friedensreich 'Frederick' Hundertwasser (1928-2000), the flag was his gift to the nation on becoming a citizen in 1983. Hundertwasser himself saw the flag as representing a combination of past heritage and future hope, with the indigenous curling fern demonstrating humanity’s harmonious peace with nature.
At Cosmic we believe sometimes it takes someone on the outside to come in and remind us of the values that we often take for granted. When we see the Koru flag we are reminded to continue to take a stand for the things we hold to be important - peace, environmental awareness, positive change, and the fact that we are our own people, not some far removed British colony.
Cosmic Corner proudly carries both flags and stickers instore and we encourage you to fly them high and get them on your bikes, cars, skateboards and unicycles… Help up spread a funky, green vision for our country's future!
